Facial Frequency

Facials might seem like an occasional luxury when you want to treat yourself, but the reality is that they are actually a very good way to regularly give your skin the care it needs.

Generally, skin needs about thirty days to regenerate. On average, facials should be spaced out about that time. How well you care for your skin at home will also impact the length of time between facials. Additionally, skin concerns and conditions being treated will be determining factors. The facial spa aesthetician at Stephen Lober Plastic Surgery can help you determine the optimal schedule for facial treatments and she can suggest an adjunct routine using our same skincare products in your home.

We are committed to a process of holistic medicine paired with treatments that work together toward an overall practice of wellness. Reaching goals by steadily practicing the needed steps will always end with the best possible physical, mental, and emotional results.

Part of our holistic approach to plastic surgery includes procedures that ride the border between the two ideas. One such treatment that we are pleased to offer patients is microdermabrasion. What is microdermabrasion, and what are some microdermabrasion benefits you can expect? Let us break it down for you.

pink tree microdermabrasion

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is an exfoliating procedure used to renew overall skin tone and texture. It can improve the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, acne scarring, melasma, and other skin-related concerns and conditions. This procedure uses a special applicator with an abrasive surface (referred to as Diamond Tip) to gently sand away the outer layer of dead skin cells. It is the ultimate advancement in non-invasive, non-surgical skin conditioning. You will leave with your face feeling soft, smooth, and bright for $65/session (or add on to a facial for $30).

  • Exfoliation with Microdermabrasion

Basic exfoliation is the process of cleansing the pores and removing dead skin cells from the epidermis (the outermost layer of our skin). Exfoliation methods are generally broken down into two categories: chemical and mechanical (physical). Microdermabrasion is a form of mechanical or physical exfoliation.

Chemical exfoliation utilizes Alpha Hydroxy Acids(AHAs), Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) or enzymes to loosen and remove dead skin cells. Depending on the skin condition, these treatments may be combined for even greater results.

Microdermabrasion is performed in our office by one of our licensed trained aestheticians with the entire procedure lasting around forty-five minutes to one hour.

Microdermabrasion Frequency

Weather, environment, and sunlight exposure can all affect our skin. The total number and frequency of treatments necessary to achieve ideal results will vary depending on the severity of the condition being treated. On average, to maintain a healthy glow and support the production of new, fresh skin cells, microdermabrasion treatments are recommended every four to six weeks. That amount of time can be different with each individual, so it’s best to consult with one of our professionals.

  • Microdermabrasion is not the sort of treatment that is designed to happen once and give you results for the rest of your life. Your skin cells are always changing and turning over, so this treatment must happen regularly enough to keep up with these skin cell regeneration cycles.

How long results last will depend on the condition of your skin and how often it is exposed to sunlight and other potentially damaging factors. The effects of the treatment typically last about a month, as most patients experience a turnover of new skin cells every 30-60 days, depending on age.

Dermaplaning

It’s not always easy to achieve healthy, glowing skin, but with cosmetic procedures like dermaplaning, you can significantly improve your complexion within minutes. Dermaplaning skims the epidermis or surface of the skin with a medical-grade blade, removing dead skin cells and fine facial hair with short, gentle strokes. It is a quick, painless, and safe manual exfoliating treatment for most skin types.

Dermaplaning works for all skin types and tones. Skincare professionals recommend it for people with sensitive skin who prefer not to use chemicals for skin exfoliating. However, it isn’t recommended for those with acne-prone skin or actively inflamed acne. The process can result in further irritation and worsen the condition.

Benefits of Dermaplaning

Promotes Smoother, Brighter-Looking Skin
Dermaplaning exfoliates the skin by removing dead skin cells and fine hairs. The procedure also stimulates cellular turnover, leaving you with healthier, more vibrant skin. Many people assume that shaving away vellus hair, (the fine, short hair covering the body), would result in darker, coarser hair growing back. In truth, the change in hair thickness is negligible with little effect on its look.

  • Reduces the Appearance of Scars, Fine Lines, and Hyperpigmentation
Dermaplaning gently scrapes off the dead skin layer, speeding up collagen production that helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and acne scars. This process also helps with the removal of old cells and facial hairs can lighten the skin, easing hyperpigmentation and scar discoloration.

    Allows Better Product Penetration
Removing the dead skin cells and reducing the fine hairs lets your new, fresh skin absorb facial products, such as moisturizers and serums, more effectively. If you plan to get a facial or chemical peel, dermaplaning helps in deeper product penetration for better results. Also, cosmetics tend to go on more smoothly and evenly after dermaplaning.

    Lessens Breakouts
Dead skin cells and fine hairs can easily trap oil, dirt, and debris in the pores, resulting in infections and acne. Dermaplaning removes these to prevent future breakouts and improve the absorption of acne treatments or medications.

    Finished in Minutes
Dermaplaning may drastically improve your skin in as little as 30 minutes. You can instantly resume your routine because there is no down time. Immediately after the treatment, your skin may appear a little pink as the new, fresh skin is revealed.

Dermaplaning Frequency

The results of dermaplaning treatment can last up to a month. Depending on your age, the normal skin renewal cycle is approximately 30-60 days, accumulating a layer of dead cells on the surface that may dull your skin’s appearance.

It’s ideal to schedule dermaplaning once a month or to have at least a 4-week interval between sessions for proper cellular turnover.

mountains sunset dermaplaning preparing

Preparing for Dermaplaning

Before your appointment for dermaplaning at Stephen Lober Plastic Surgery, it’s essential to prepare your skin first.

Discontinue Aggressive Treatments
It’s best to stop aggressive skin treatments three days before your appointment to prevent over-exfoliation and minimize the risk of excessive irritation. Temporarily discontinue your use of strong chemicals like retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids or AHA, and microbeads. If you’re taking acne treatments like Accutane, it’s best to wait six months after your last dose to decrease your skin’s sensitivity.

  • Know the Right Sequencing of Cosmetic Services
If you intend to schedule several skin treatments, visit a specialist first to determine the best sequencing. For instance, facials, laser treatments, and chemical peels tend to yield the best results when done after dermaplaning. However, procedures like derma fillers and Botox injections should never be done on the same day of your dermaplaning session. Instead, schedule these a couple of days before to achieve optimum results.

    Avoid Getting Your Skin Irritated
Undergoing dermaplaning with irritated skin is not ideal and can make the procedure painful. Reschedule your session if you have sunburn, a breakout, or other forms of skin irritation. Waxing can irritate your skin as well. Do it a week or two before your dermaplaning treatment.

    Minimize Sun Exposure
Being exposed to the sun for prolonged periods can make your skin more sensitive and leave you with a painful sunburn. Before your session, stay out of the sun as much as possible.

ocean water rocks microneedling

Microneedling

While microneedling has been around since about 1995, it is becoming more and more popular thanks to celebrities and social media influencers. But while you may have heard about it, you might not know exactly what it is or how it could help. Our microneedling services located in Athens, Georgia will help your skin recover and look fresher than ever!

woman face microneedling benefits

Benefits of Microneedling

A microneedling procedure punctures your skin with tiny sterile needles. These minor wounds can help cause your body to produce more collagen and elastin, which is why microneedling can also be referred to as collagen induction therapy (CIT). As part of the natural healing process, your body sends collagen and elastin to repair the damage to your skin. That extra collagen and elastin repair the small punctures, helping the surrounding skin gain more elasticity and hydration, which helps fight against fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and sun damage.

  • Because you are piercing your body with multiple small incisions, there can be some minor pain after the procedure, and your skin will be red. As your skin heals in the next few days, you may notice some peeling, or it may feel tight. This is normal and should be expected as part of your recovery process.

While there is usually no bleeding during microneedling, deeper treatments can cause the skin to bleed or bruise, which will take additional time to heal.

Microneedling FAQs

  • Microneedling and microdermabrasion are different skin treatments intended to address different skin issues.

Microdermabrasion is excellent for irritated, dry, or rough skin. It removes the top layer of your skin with exfoliation. This can help improve minor textural irregularities in your skin and increase blood flow for collagen stimulation.

Microneedling is what you should use if you’re looking to shrink pores, repair acne scars, reduce fine lines, and/or reduce deep wrinkles.

  • Your skin needs time to recover and for new layers of skin to grow between sessions. For the best results, you should wait at least four to six weeks between sessions.

  • Generally, it takes only a day to heal from microneedling. If your treatment is more extensive, it could take two or three days for your skin to heal. While it only takes a day to do most of the healing, remember that your skin is still fresh and sensitive.

  • It’s normal for your skin to be red after microneedling for about a day. By the next day, your skin won’t be as red and should be pinker, and should go back to your normal skin tone in a few days.

Because your skin is very sensitive directly after a microneedling session, you should avoid using any creams, lotions, or serums to your skin to reduce the redness. Do not try to cover up the redness with makeup—makeup will block your pores and can cause breakouts.

For the best results, take care of your skin with gentle moisturizers and cleansers to help speed up your recovery time.

  • Your skin is still highly sensitive after microneedling. If you use products like glycolic acid, retinol, or vitamin C too soon, you can irritate your skin and slow the healing process.

You should wait at least 48 hours until you use a vitamin C serum. After 48 hours, don’t jump straight back into your previous skincare regime. Slowly go back to your daily beauty routine, using products less often, especially if you use anti-aging products.

These treatments use a mixture of chemical exfoliants (salicylic, lactic, and glycolic acids for moderate peel and trichloroacetic acid for a medical-grade, deeper peel) that cause controlled damage to the epidermal layer of the skin. This ignites regenerative changes that restore the skin’s tone and texture, leaving you with clearer, brighter skin overall.
